Does a Butterfly Bush Like Sun or Shade?

When the scented plume-shaped flowers bloom in summer, the sun-loving butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) attracts butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to the garden.

The butterfly bush is a showy deciduous shrub native to southern China. There are numerous types of butterfly bushes to choose from with colors ranging from almost black to red, yellow, white and pale purple.

It grows in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 9.

Maintain Sun Requirement For most types of butterfly bushes, they grow best in full sun but some varieties can tolerate partial shade. You can grow butterfly bushes in dappled shade or morning sun and afternoon shade, but avoid deep shade areas. Full sun means the area gets at least six hours of direct sun a day.

Part shade to part sun is anywhere between two and six hours of direct sun each day, while less than two hours of sun per day is considered full shade.

Butterfly Bush Characteristic The fast-growing butterfly bush reaches a mature height of 6 to 10 feet tall in one or two growing seasons. The cone or wand-shaped flower heads grow 5 to 12 inches long and bloom from summer through fall.

The flowers bloom on arching branches. Butterfly bushes form a loose, multi-stem shrub well suited for border areas, informal hedges, cottage gardens
